Mulch Refresh

Fresh mulch is one of the highest-return investments you can make in your landscape. It suppresses weeds, holds moisture, moderates soil temperature, and makes every bed look finished and intentional.

More than dropping mulch in a pile

Mulch applied correctly at the right depth does meaningful work. Applied incorrectly, it can create problems. We do it right.

  • Old mulch turned or removed if it has broken down into a thick mat
  • Weed removal before mulch application so coverage is effective
  • Premium double-ground shredded hardwood mulch, applied at 3-inch depth
  • Proper clearance maintained around plant crowns and tree bases to prevent rot
  • Bed edge cleanup and re-definition included in the visit
  • Cleanup of any overflow or mulch on sidewalks, drives, or lawn
  • Color options available: natural brown, dark brown, or black
Why 3 Inches Matters

Depth is the detail most people miss

The common approach is 1 to 1.5 inches -- enough to look fresh briefly but not enough to function. At 3 inches, mulch retains up to 70% more soil moisture, suppresses the vast majority of annual weed seeds, and moderates soil temperature by several degrees in both directions.

Mulch that is too thick (over 4 inches) creates problems: anaerobic breakdown, surface mold, and oxygen restriction at the root zone. We apply the right amount and pull it away from plant crowns.

Most visits: 3 to 5 hours depending on scope
Best timing: spring or early summer

It does more than look good

Dramatically fewer weeds

A properly applied 3-inch mulch layer blocks light to annual weed seeds in the soil below, cutting viable germination by a significant margin without any chemicals involved.

Healthier soil and stronger plants

As mulch breaks down it feeds soil biology, improves drainage in clay soils, and supports moisture retention in sandy soils. Your plants spend energy growing, not struggling with soil conditions.

Immediate curb appeal impact

Fresh dark mulch against green plant foliage is one of the simplest and most effective visual upgrades a front yard can get. It makes plants look more intentional and the beds look designed.

Mulch refresh FAQ

What type of mulch do you use?
We use premium double-ground shredded hardwood mulch. This grade breaks down more slowly than single-ground product, holds its color longer, and knits together rather than washing away in heavy rain. We offer natural brown, dark brown, and black -- dark brown is the most popular and gives the highest contrast against green foliage.
Should I remove old mulch before adding new?
If your existing mulch has broken down into a thick, matted layer that restricts water penetration, we will remove or significantly turn it before adding new material. In most cases if existing mulch is 1 inch or less deep, we can layer directly on top to reach the correct 3-inch depth. We assess this on arrival and advise you before proceeding.
How often does mulch need to be refreshed?
Once per year is the standard recommendation. By spring, most mulch layers have decomposed enough to lose functional depth and visual impact. An annual spring or early summer refresh keeps beds performing correctly and looking fresh without over-building organic material in the beds.
Does mulch attract termites or other pests?
Mulch does not attract termites -- but mulch installed directly against your foundation can create a moisture environment that termites, once present, may exploit. We always maintain at least 6 inches of clearance between mulch and your home's foundation, which is a straightforward way to eliminate that concern entirely.
